It’s official, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds are now husband and wife. The celebrity couple quietly tied the knot on Saturday, September 27 in an intimate ceremony outside Vancouver in the groom’s native Canada.

A representative for the actress confirmed to US Weekly a wedding did exist and was attended by her mother, Melanie Sloan, and her brother, Adrian Johansson. The marriage is the first for both Scarlett and Ryan. No other details are being provided.

Scarlett, 23, and Ryan, 31, began dating February last year shortly after he ended his engagement to singer Alanis Morissette. They announced their engagement in May 2008. Details of the exact engagement day and ring were kept under wrap, but Scarlett had since been spotted sporting a three-carat diamond ring estimated to be worth about $30,000, which was widely believed to be the ring Ryan gave her to mark their engagement.

Neither Scarlett nor Ryan has issued official statement about their hush hush nuptials, but a representative for the actor has been telling E! “Yes, I can confirm they are married.”

Yoda the Cat

Meet Yoda, a household pet born with an extra pair of ears.

Chicago, Illinois, couple Valerie and Ted Rock took the cat in two years ago after they visited a local bar, where a group of drinkers were handing the animal around and making fun of him.

Since being adopted by the Rocks and after getting his picture posted on the Internet, the two-year-old feline has become an international media celebrity.

The Rocks have received calls from Good Morning America, Fox News and The Tyra Banks Show. The moggy’s mugshot has graced the pages of the London Guardian and British tabloids.

Despite his strange appearance, Yoda - named after the pointy-eared Star Wars character (pictured below) - is a perfectly normal and affectionate cat and a delight to have around.

His extra ears are thought to be the result of a genetic mutation.

But Yoda’s owners are keeping a close watch on their much-loved pet. They are concerned he could be catnapped because he is so different.

Tree Man offered new hope

An Indonesian fisherman who is “half man half tree” has been offered new hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A.

32-year-old Dede, who lives in a remote village in Indonesia with his two children, feared that he would be killed by the tree-like growths that cover his body.

Known locally as ‘Tree Man’ his condition has baffled local doctors for 20 years.

He has root like structures growing out of his body - branches that can grow up to 5cm a year and which protrude from his hands and feet, and welts covering his whole body.

In an attempt to earn a living to support his family, he is part of a circus troupe, displaying his Tree Man limbs along with others afflicted with skin deformities in ‘freak’ shows.

The former fisherman was the subject of a documentary “Half Man Half Tree”, part of the “My Shocking Story” series on Discovery Channel TV.

Dede’s story began when wart-like “roots” started growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident. The medical world was completely baffled.

The welts spread rapidly across his body and soon he was not able to carry out ordinary household tasks.

Dede was sacked from his job and deserted by his wife. He has been raising two children, now in their late teens, in poverty. He is resigned to the fact that local doctors have no cure for his condition.

To try to support his family he even joined a local “freak show”, parading in front of a paying audience along with victims of other peculiar diseases.

While he has the support of his extended family, he has frequently been a target of ridicule and abuse in rural fishing village where he lives.

But now new hope has emerged for Dede after an American dermatology expert flew out to his home village south of the capital Jakarta.

Dr. Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland claims to have identified Dede’s condition, and has proposed a treatment that could completely change his life.

Following the testing of samples of the lesions and Dede’s blood, Dr. Gaspari says his condition is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This is a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.

Dede’s problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system. This means his body is unable to contain the warts.

According to Dr. Gaspari, the virus was able to “hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells”, instructing them to produce huge amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as “cutaneous horns” on both his hands and feet.

The doctor became involved in the case through the Discovery Channel documentary, and he is convinced that Dede’s condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been demonstrated to stop the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.

A 19-year-old girl was tortured for 13 hours by two women after she was wrongly accused of stealing a mobile phone.

Katie McNamara was lured to a house by her former friend Francesca Raby, 18, before her marathon ordeal took place.

During the horrific attack, Raby and her friend Kelly Louise Garrity, 26, punched, burned, kicked and stabbed McNamara before locking her in a cupboard.

The two women hacked off McNamara’s long black hair and forced her to lick her own blood off the floor.

After Raby and Garrity were sentenced for assault and false imprisonment, McNamara, now 20, spoke of her horrific attack.

She said: ‘I thought I was going to die. They were going to keep me another night if the neighbour had not turned up.

‘I kept asking them to stop but they carried on, laughing at me. I was really scared when they were stamping on my head. I couldn’t escape - they had locked the front door and there were two of them, I had no chance.

‘They cut my hair and then put my face into a mirror and said “you don’t look so pretty now”. Maybe they were jealous of my looks. I will never forgive them for what they did.’

Katie’s injuries were so severe her mother Denise didn’t even recognise her in the hospital bed.

Sentencing the two women at Minshull Street Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Geake said: ‘That night, possibly affected by a cocktail of drugs and alcohol, you allowed your darker sides to get the better of you in a most bizarre way. It was quite inexplicable.’

Garrity was sentenced to four years in prison and Raby 40 months in a young offenders’ institution after both pleading guilty.

McNamara originally fell out with Raby after the latter had accused her of stealing her mobile phone in November.

Later that day, Raby phoned her up apologising and asked her to come to an address in Farnworth, Bolton.

After she arrived at the house with another friend, the two women pulled her by the hair into the kitchen and started kicking and beating her.

McNamara’s friend attempted to intervene, but was threatened and told to leave.

She was then taken by taxi to a second house, where two men joined in the attack.

During the attack, McNamara lost conscious repeatedly.

As well as being punched, kicked and stamped on, she was burned with cigarettes and Garrity threw a kitchen knife at her.

A female neighbour visited the house the following morning, where Garrity and Raby showed what they had done to McNamara.

They told the woman they would kill her if she told police.

After being hospitalised, McNamara spent four months receiving treatment as an outpatient. Her hearing has been permanently damaged.

Train crushes railway sex couple

A couple in South Africa who were having sex on a railway track in Mpumalanga Province have been killed by a goods train, police say.

Spokesman Abie Khoabane said it took place on Friday evening and the victims were yet to be identified.

He told local newspapers that the couple ignored the driver’s shouts as he moved the train into the disused station in Kinross town.

“They continued with their business,” he told the Sowetan paper.

According to South Africa’s Beeld newspaper, the area was deserted with no cars or houses nearby.

The man died at the scene and the woman died later at hospital, the Sowetan reports.

The police have appealed for those with missing relatives to come forward to help with their investigation.

Federal and local authorities are on the hunt for someone peddling 12 photos of 17 year old Jamie Lynn Spears breastfeeding her newborn daughter Maddie.

According to TMZ.com, the photos were taken on her fiance Casey Aldridge’s digital camera.

Law enforcement officials believe an employee at a Louisiana Wal-Mart - where Aldridge dropped off his camera — may have made extra copies in an attempt to sell them.

Because Jamie Lynn is a minor, selling the photos — or buying them — could constitute a violation of federal laws prohibiting pornography, according to TMZ.

Six-year-old Erica Rix rests in her family’s Los Gatos home in a beige cast after surgeons beat the odds and reconnected her left hand, which had been severed by a jump rope in a freak accident.

Two weeks ago, Erica was riding in the back seat of her mother Allison Rix’s car and playing with a jump rope that she had picked up at soccer practice. She put one end of the rope out the window to flutter in the wind, but it caught on the car’s axle. With a nooselike slipknot tight around her wrist, the rope sliced off her hand.

“I couldn’t make sense of what happened,” said Allison Rix, who said she hadn’t seen the rope. The back window was open about eight inches. “The next thing I know, my daughter is bleeding to death and there’s no hand.”

But the quick action of passersby, rapid emergency response and 10-hour surgery by hand specialists saved Erica’s life and hand. She eventually may regain movement and function.

He came across Allison Rix’s Suburban stopped in the middle of the road, and her hysterical next to it. “It was a terrible sight” — one that made it hard to sleep for nights afterward, he said.

Erica was still buckled into her booster seat, her mother said. Bailey, who had taken classes to refresh his first-aid skills about four times, used his belt to create a tourniquet for the wounded arm. Then he began calming Erica.

Another motorist, Gail Andrews, was driving the opposite way on Daves. “I saw Allison get out of the car and she was shouting, ‘Please help me, my baby, my baby.’”

Andrews, a former hospital manager who volunteers at the Los Gatos Police Department, knew that 911 calls from cell phones sometimes don’t immediately reach local dispatchers. So she dialed the Los Gatos police direct emergency number, which she had programmed into her phone.

Passerby Pat Heller stopped and spotted Erica’s hand, with the blue-and-white nylon rope still around it, in the street. She and a resident helped direct traffic to protect the hand from cars.

“I took some real deep breaths. I just kept telling myself, ‘This is a child’s hand,’” Heller said

As Rix was still trying to redial 911, Andrews jumped into Rix’s car to comfort Erica. “I was holding her, through to the back seat. She was amazingly calm, and wanted to know what happened.”

Andrews and Bailey told Erica she had had an accident. “She asked, ‘Will I have a cast?’” Bailey said, “And I said, ‘Yes, when my daughter broke her arm she had a cast and it was pink and everybody signed it.’”

“And she wanted to know who was going to come to help,” Andrews said. “I said, ‘Firefighters, and if you listen closely, you will be able to hear them.’”

Indeed, the sirens were approaching, responding to Andrews’ call. Rix said she hadn’t been able to get through on 911. (Los Gatos police said dispatchers couldn’t understand her, so they called the cell phone company to get her address.)

The ambulance took Erica to Valley Medical Center in San Jose, then she was airlifted to Stanford. Doctors faced a huge challenge, surgeon Nathan Menon said, in trying to reattach the tiny veins and arteries of a young patient, and in repairing the damage inflicted by the rough amputation.

But the four-surgeon team, led by Dr. Jeffrey Yao, reattached the severed hand in 10 hours of surgery. “We are very proud of our effort and results. When a child is injured, it is an emotional thing,” Menon said.

During nine days in intensive care, Erica received a host of visitors: Los Gatos Police Chief Scott Seaman and various police officers, her rescuers, friends and well-wishers. She thanked Andrews and noted that the Monte Sereno resident wasn’t wearing her hair in a ponytail as she had the day of the accident,.

A classroom of fifth graders at Saratoga Elementary school initiated a fundraiser, donating and selling toys and snacks during recess, to fund the tutoring Erica will need after her reconstructive surgeries. Bailey’s wife, Cheryl, is holding a fundraising luncheon with her group Wonderful Witchy Women With a Cause on Oct. 27.

Rix said Erica is still struggling with recovery. But, she said, the family is grateful to the angels who came by. ”We thank our lucky stars every day.

It was the ultimate expression of road rage. A furious woman driver died after ramming another vehicle and spinning her wheels so fast that her own car burst into flames.

Serena Sutton-Smith, 54, burnt to death after refusing to get out of her Vauxhall Nova as she sat with her foot flat on the accelerator.

She spun the wheels so fast that her tyres disintegrated and the metal rims sent a shower of sparks into the engine, igniting the brake fluid and setting the car on fire.

Appalled onlookers urged her to get out of the car as the flames licked around her but she told them to “F*** off”, an inquest in Gloucester was told.

The inquest heard that Paula Small was driving her Fiat Punto when Ms Sutton-Smith emerged from a side road without stopping, causing her to swerve to avoid a collision. Mrs Small was forced on the grass verge and she flashed her lights as Ms Sutton-Smith passed her.

Ms Sutton-Smith then pulled over and Mrs Small stopped a short way in front of her. She was getting out when the Vauxhall Nova rammed her car.

Mrs Small said: “I opened my door and put my foot out but as I was getting out there was a bang and I hit my head on the door frame. I was frozen with terror.” As neighbours came to investigate they saw Ms Sutton-Smith sitting with a furious expression, revving her engine and spinning her wheels.

Nicholas Willmore told the inquest that he was in his workshop at Cottage Farm Antiques when his mother alerted him to what was happening outside. As he walked across the road to the two cars he saw smoke coming from the engine of the Nova.

He said: “There was a deafening sound of an engine running as though someone had a foot stuck on the accelerator.

“The car’s front wheels were spinning and there was loads of revving. I could see a biggish person at the wheel and there was movement in the car. Flames were coming from underneath the car and I thought the person might be trapped inside although I couldn’t hear any shouting.

“I opened the driver’s door wide. It opened easily. The person looked at me, it was a big built woman. I said ’You’ve got to get out of the car. It’s going to burst into flames’.

“The person replied ’F*** off, just f*** off’ and she raised her right fist towards me in a threatening manner before slamming the door shut.

“I was a bit bewildered and moved 3-4 yards back. I could see her gesturing towards me. She seemed to be in quite a rage. Both fists were raised and being shaken and the person was looking right at me.

“This was definitely done in a manner to tell me to stay away from her car.” Mr Willmore grabbed a fire extinguisher from his workshop but it failed to put out the flames. Another motorist also tried to extinguish the flames.

Mr Willmore added: “The heat was getting more and more intense and the flames were growing. I could no longer see inside. There was nothing that could be done to help the person inside.

Fire officer Andrew Clayton said: “The circumstances indicate that this was a deliberate act. She remained in the vehicle after ramming a car and then sat with the front wheels spinning until fire developed.

“The front nearside passenger wheel gouged into the road surface by 50mm and the tyre was totally destroyed by the friction. This would have produced sparks igniting fluid, most probably brake fluid.” The inquest heard that Ms Sutton-Smith, who had previously worked behind the bar at a working men’s club in Ashton sub Edge, had a history of erratic behaviour and suffered from bipolar disorder.

Alan Crickmore, the Gloucestershire coroner, said that her mental condition meant that she failed to appreciate the danger she was in.

He said “At no time, prior to becoming incapicitated, was Serena trapped in her vehicle. She was certainly able to get out of it when Mr Willmore opened the door and invited her to do so.

“I am driven to the conclusion that if at any time she had wanted to do so before becoming incapacitated she could have got out of the car and would not have died as a result of the fire.

“I am satisfied the fire was started because of her deliberate actions. But I am far from satisfied that at that point in time it was her clear intention that death would ensue.

“I think it is more likely than not that she failed to understand the peril she was in and the consequences of her actions.” He recorded a verdict of accidental death.

It was a call the emergency operator never expected to receive. Instead of tears, screams or a plea for help, she could hear only barking and a distinctly canine whimper.

Anywhere else and the emergency services might have hung up, blaming a prankster. But the specially-trained German shepherd dog Buddy had already saved his master three times by making emergency calls to police with his teeth.

Police in Scottsdale, Arizona, released a recording yesterday of the latest call by 18-month-old Buddy when his owner suffered a seizure.

“Hello, this is 911. Hello . . . Can you hear me? Is there somebody there you can give the phone to?” the emergency worker asks. Buddy responds by barking and whimpering, but the operator stays on the line because any call from his owner, Joe Stalnaker, brings up an alert on the emergency computer system to say that a trained assistance dog may call when his master is incapacitated.

Chris Trott, the emergency despatcher who took the latest call, said that it was the first time in her five years in the job that she had received an emergency call from a dog.

“It was interesting. The entire room was amazed. There are dispatchers who have been there quite some time – 20 years – and never had a call from a dog before,” she said.

After the paramedics arrived, Buddy rode in the ambulance with his owner to hospital.

Officer Dave Pubins, a police spokesman, said that the call on September 10 was the third time the specially trained dog had summoned help.

“There were two other occurrences when the dog had done this. It was the same thing before. They heard the dog in the background,” he said.

Mr Stalnaker is prone to potentially fatal seizures after suffering a brain injury while serving in the US military a decade ago. He adopted Buddy at the age of 8 weeks from a Michigan-based group called Paws With A Cause, which trains so-called “service dogs” to help humans.

Mr Stalnaker trained Buddy to pick up the telephone and bring it to him whenever he falls. All the buttons are programmed to call the emergency operator.

He said: “He doesn’t actually sit there and dial 911, but whenever he picks up the phone, one of his teeth inevitably hits the number, and if it’s held down for more than three seconds, it dials the police department.”

Without Buddy he would be forced to live in a home because of his disability. “He knows what to do. He’s looking after me,” Mr Stalnaker said.

Buddy is not the first “service dog” to call the emergency operator for help. Leana Beasley’s four-year-old rottweiler, Faith, made an emergency call by pressing a speed-dial button with her nose and barking urgently when her epileptic owner fell out of her wheelchair and hit her head on a kitchen cabinet at her home in Washington state in 2004.

“I sensed there was a problem on the other end of the 911 call,” said Jenny Buchanan, who took the call. “The dog was too persistent in barking directly into the phone receiver. I knew she was trying to tell me something.”

After police arrested eight suspected members of the ring, one boasted how they had previously dug up the grave of a newly-dead girl and eaten her heart.
Another said he did not expect to be punished, saying: “Satan will help me to avoid responsibility. I made lots of sacrifices to him.”
And a third said he had got fed up with God for not making him rich and that “things improved” after he started praying to the Devil.
The discovery in Yaroslavl, 300 miles from Moscow, sent a shudder across Russia — where Satanists are feared to have committed a string of mutilations and killings.

The victims, who all disappeared in June, were named as Anya Gorokhova, Olga Pukhova, Varya Kuzmina and Andrei Sorokin.
The upside-down cross marking what was left of their bones and scalps had a small animal nailed to it.
Police began tracing the gang after finding out that all the victims had made phone calls to alleged leader Nikolai Ogolobyak.

Locals said they all knew Ogolobyak, whose grandmother revealed he had sung in the local church choir as a boy.
The rest of the cult were described by ex-teachers as having been of low intelligence and moody at school.
Three were named by police as Ksenia Kuznetsova, Alexander Voronov and Anton Makovkin.
The dad of victim Andrei said: “My son said he had Goths and Satanists among his friends.
“I wasn’t scared. I thought, ‘Well, let him spend his time sitting around a cemetery — there’s not much harm in that, is there?’”

Russia has seen a series of gruesome murders, rapes and desecrations linked to Satanic cults.
Moscow alone has 15 whose worship is thought to revolve around symbols such as 666, an upturned five-pointed star within a circle and the swastika.
Devil worshippers believe in putting themselves first and their core values include pride, indulgence, ambition and meeting sexual desires.
In Britain, about 400 people list their religion as Satanism. Followers meet at a “Grotto” for rituals with candles and swords run by witches and warlocks.

A tape recording of a mother telling in detail how she killed her disabled daughter was played to a Crown Court jury yesterday.

The harrowing evidence was heard in the trial of Joanne Hill who is alleged to have murdered four-and-a-half year old Naomi because she could not come to terms with her having cerebral palsy.
Ad saleswoman Hill, of Connah’s Quay, North Wales, admits killing the youngster but denies murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The court heard a taped extract of one of Hill’s interviews at Runcorn police station with Detective Constable Andrew Roberts.
She had been taken to the station after being arrested on suspicion of murdering her daughter, after she took her lifeless body to hospital in the early hours of November 27 last year.
Hill, 32, described in a steady voice how she had drawn a bath almost to the top around 6.30pm at her home on November 26, put pink bubble bath into the water, felt the temperature and then lifted her daughter into the water.
She said: “Then I pushed her down. I held her down by the head. She’s lying on her front with her face to the side. I am holding her by the neck, around her neck.
“I am holding her against the bottom of the bath. She did not come up.”

When asked to describe the sequence in more detail by DC Roberts, Hill said she had put her hands under Naomi’s arms to lift her into the bath, so that the girl stood facing her.
“I told her to sit down. I was being forceful with her. I said, come on you are having a bath, and told her to sit down.
“I held her by her head and neck area, on the back area of her neck and head - it just happened so quick. I just grabbed her by the back of the neck and kept her under water.
“She was on her front at first, and then turned on to her side to face the wall.”
As the jury listened to the tape recording, Hill sat in the dock facing forward, expressionless.
After the tape was turned off, DC Roberts continued reading the rest of the interview to the court.
Hill had told him: “I pulled her down. She was a bit whingey but not a lot. I got hold of her neck and pushed her in the water.
She turned on to her right side after a while - I think she’d gone, she’d stopped moving.”
She added: “I had to leave the house before my husband returned home from work around 7.30pm. My plan was to get Naomi dressed and then take her out in the car.”
Hill admitted in interview she had thought of holding her daughter under water before she ran the bath.
While driving around Chester and its surroundings before taking the body to the Countess of Chester Hospital, she said: “I was confused, my state of mind was not all there. I had suicidal thoughts.”
Earlier the jury heard Hill said Naomi was under water for around 10 minutes before she took the body out and dressed it in dungarees, a duffel coat and pink trainers.
The body was placed in the car seat of her Renault Megane, as if the girl was sleeping.
Naomi had been keeping her awake at nights, and she (Hill) was having trouble sleeping, she said. On the night before the tragedy Hill had slept in Naomi’s bed.
Asked in a previous interview why she had killed Naomi, Hill said: “I don’t know I had not been well.”
The case continues.

An Australian pub has come under fire for offering free drinks to women who take off their panties and hang them on a rail above the bar.

The Saint Hotel in Melbourne promoted its offer as “No undie Sunday,” with a notorious paparazzi picture of US singer Britney Spears getting out of a car wearing no knickers.

The advertisement in an entertainment magazine offers a free glass of champagne to women who “flash bra or undies to bar staff.”

Those who go further and “hang your undies on the line above the bar” win 50 dollars (40 US dollars) worth of free drinks.

Politicians and the hotel industry accused the management of sexism and “inappropriate” behaviour.

“In this day and age, in 2008, to be promoting the drinking of alcohol along those lines, I just think is part of a bygone era,” said Victoria state’s acting Premier Rob Hulls.

The same hotel drew criticism in June when it employed a shirtless dwarf to pour shots of liquor down the throats of patrons.

For the past few months we’ve all been very worried about Amy Winehouse’ state of mind and also physical health. Not only has she been abusing her body with stack loads of drugs of all variations, she has lost an incredible amount of weight… too much in fact.

We all know the reason for Amy’s recent dramatic weight loss, so it fills me with some pleasure that she seems to be making an effort to gain weight now, after turning to a diet of fast food. Maybe I’m just being hopeful but could this be the first sign that Amy wants to start being a bit healthier?

It’s weird to be equating fast food with healthy eating but when you are as painfully stick thin as Amy, anything which makes you put weight on and fast has got to be good. But will this be of any benefit if she doesn’t also come off drugs at the same time?

Winehouse has apparently eaten McDonalds for the last 7 days and gained an incredible stone in weight already. Also high on her menu has been carb heavy Caribbean food such as yams, dumplings, bananas, jerk chicken and rice and peas.

At the depths of Amy Winehouse‘ ‘problem period’ a few weeks ago she was thought to have slumped to just 6 and a half stone in weight, and resembled a stick insect… a drug addict one at that.

Come on Amy, keep it up, get to a healthier weight and stay there. Also, you know that place they call Rehab, it’s time you swallowed your pride, ignored your own song, and gave it a go. It can’t be all bad!
